Karila Farm, a piece of Äkäslompolo history
Karila Farm was founded in 1953 as a farm for front-line soldiers.

Heino and Lahja Kaulanen moved to Karila, located on the northern edge of the village, with their four children. They had a few cows and a horse in the barn. The horse was the family’s only means of transportation and work machine, as at that time there was not even a road to the village.

From the beginning, tourism was part of the family’s livelihood, and tourists were accommodated in the farm’s main house. Lahja-mäntä prepared food for the guests in the farm’s kitchen. The same was done in other houses in the village.

Now, decades later, the property still includes the surrounding fields and former buildings, which are renovated according to need and situation.
There are no longer cows in the barn, nor horses, but in winter there are reindeer in the enclosure. In summer, Konijänkä horses graze in the fields and chickens and a black rooster crow in the yard.
